Vygotsky Child-Parent Consulting and Learning Center conducted a One-Day Teachers’ Training Workshop on Child Psychology at Prabhat English Secondary School. The workshop was facilitated by Priyanka Chaguthi, Parenting Coach, Early Years Educator, Teacher Trainer, and Founder of Vygotsky Nepal.
The training focused on helping teachers develop a deeper understanding of children’s psychological, emotional, social, and developmental needs and apply this understanding in their everyday classroom practices.
Children communicate their needs, emotions, and experiences in different ways. Sometimes, challenging or unexpected behaviour can be connected to a child's developmental stage, emotional needs, learning environment, or difficulty expressing feelings.
The workshop encouraged teachers to look beyond behaviour and understand the child behind the behaviour. By developing greater awareness of child psychology, teachers can respond more appropriately and create classrooms where children feel safe, respected, understood, and supported.
The one-day teacher training explored important areas of child psychology and classroom practice, including:
Understanding child development and developmental needs
Understanding children's emotions and behaviour
Psychological needs of children in the classroom
Recognizing children's individual differences
Understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviour
Effective communication with children
Emotional regulation and co-regulation
Positive approaches to behaviour management
Building trust and connection with students
Creating a safe and supportive classroom environment
Supporting children's social and emotional development
Developing positive teacher-child relationships
Understanding child psychology helps teachers adapt their teaching approaches according to children's developmental and emotional needs.
The workshop provided opportunities for teachers to reflect on common classroom situations and consider how their responses can influence children's behaviour, confidence, participation, and learning.
Rather than relying only on correction or punishment, teachers were encouraged to use connection, communication, positive guidance, and developmentally appropriate strategies when supporting children's behaviour.
Teachers play an important role in children's overall development. Beyond academic learning, they contribute to children's emotional well-being, social development, confidence, communication skills, and sense of belonging.
Through professional development opportunities such as this workshop, teachers can strengthen their ability to recognize children's needs and create more responsive and child-centered learning environments.

When teachers understand children's developmental and emotional needs, they can build stronger relationships and create learning environments that support both academic growth and overall well-being.
